Donald Sutherland — Invasion of the Body Snatchers Tee One face. One pointing finger. One of the most unsettling endings in horror history. Released in 1978, Invasion of the Body Snatchers transformed the 1956 sci-fi classic into a paranoid nightmare perfectly suited to post-Watergate America. Directed by Philip Kaufman and set in San Francisco, the film stars Donald Sutherland alongside Brooke Adams, Jeff Goldblum, Veronica Cartwright, and Leonard Nimoy as ordinary people slowly realize that the population around them is being replaced by emotionless duplicates grown from alien pods. Sutherland's Matthew Bennell spends the film desperately trying to remain human as friends, coworkers, and eventually the entire city seem to succumb. Then comes that final shot: Sutherland turns, points directly toward the camera, opens his mouth, and releases the horrifying pod-person shriek. No dialogue necessary. The image has become one of horror cinema's great visual shorthand moments. Even people who haven't seen the film recognize the face—wide eyes, open mouth, accusatory finger, and the sudden realization that absolutely nobody can be trusted. Beyond the scares, Body Snatchers has endured because its central idea can mean almost anything: conformity, loss of individuality, political paranoia, consumer culture, or simply the fear that everyone around you has somehow changed while you haven't.
