Sussex Flax

Before the advent of the industrial cotton industry, flax was the fiber plant for northern climates. To make linen from flax involves a process called retting, in which, after the the long stems are harvested and dried, water is added so that the layers of pectin on the outside rot away from the valuable fibers within. Not only is this heirloom English variety ideal for those wanting to try retting themselves, but it also sports delicate purply-blue blooms and delicious brown seeds that are high in Omega-3s. Makes a great medium height border border along walkways or a good addition to wildflower mixes. Will self-sow if left to do so in the garden.
