Sundance Pollen Traps

Sundance Pollen Traps Beekeepers have long used pollen traps to collect a portion of the pollen that bees bring into the hive, and the Sundance Pollen Trap has become the industry standard for this work. Designed for efficiency and cleanliness, these traps provide a reliable way to harvest pollen that can be used for your own feeding patties or packaged for sale. By guiding bees through a series of screens, the trap gently removes some of the pollen from their legs while still allowing enough to pass into the colony for use. Key Features and Benefits Efficient pollen collection: Capable of producing several pounds of pollen in 48 hours under strong flow. Clean and dry storage: Pollen drops into a protected collection tray with an easy-access drawer. Trap options: Available in 8-frame or 10-frame sizes, with top-mounted or bottom-mounted designs. Top-mounted traps: Provide cleaner pollen with less debris; placed below the inner cover and require bees to use a top entrance. Bottom-mounted traps: Collect efficiently but may allow small amounts of debris; feature a sliding door to start or stop collection. Fully assembled: Each trap comes ready to use with a back-front entrance and rear-access pollen drawer. Versatile use: Collected pollen can be used for pollen patties, protein patties, or sold as local pollen. Detailed Description The Sundance Pollen Trap is a practical tool for beekeepers looking to collect and use pollen. Honey bees naturally gather pollen from flowering plants and bring it back to the hive. By directing foragers through a screened entrance, the trap gently brushes off a portion of this pollen, which then falls into a collection tray kept inside the hive. The tray is accessible through a rear drawer, allowing for easy removal of clean, dry pollen. These traps are known to produce significant yields—it’s not uncommon for a colony to collect several pounds of pollen within 48 hours during strong flows. For beekeepers, this offers an opportunity both to create a home supply of pollen for patties and to produce local pollen for sale. Sundance traps are available in both 8-frame and 10-frame sizes, with two installation styles: Top-mounted traps – Placed below the inner cover and telescoping cover, they provide pollen that is mostly free of debris. Bees must be trained to use the top entrance, and the trap must be removed to stop collection. Bottom-mounted traps – Installed at the hive entrance, they provide effective collection but may capture some hive debris. An integrated luan cover helps protect the tray, and the trap can be opened or closed with a sliding door. In either style, beekeepers should sort through harvested pollen before selling to remove any debris.
