SUMATRA BEBAGI KEPADA

Sumatra Bebagi Kepada—pronounced beh-bah-gi kay-pah-dah—translates to "share with" in Indonesian, a nod to the communal knowledge-sharing tradition among Indonesia's coffee farmers. Roasted by Goshen Coffee, this single-origin lot showcases the rich, earthy character that makes Sumatran coffees so distinctive. Grown in the volcanic soils of Indonesia's tropical highlands and processed using the wet-hulled giling basah method, this coffee develops a heavy body and complex, savory profile that stands apart from brighter African or floral Central American offerings. Tasting NotesExpect deep, herbal complexity with savory undertones—think fresh tobacco leaf, cedar, and dark chocolate with a whisper of mushroom earthiness. The body is thick and syrupy, coating the palate with a viscous texture that lingers long after each sip. Acidity is low and muted, allowing those earthy, umami-forward flavors to dominate. The finish is clean despite the weight, with subtle spice notes—white pepper, cardamom—emerging as the cup cools. This is a coffee that rewards slow sipping and contemplation. Brew MethodsSumatra Bebagi Kepada excels in full-immersion methods where its heavy body and savory complexity can fully express themselves. French press is ideal: a 1:15 ratio with a 4-minute steep brings out all that syrupy texture and herbal depth. For espresso, this coffee pulls beautifully as a straight shot or blended base—expect thick crema and a flavor profile that holds up to milk without losing character. Cold brew enthusiasts will love how the earthy notes mellow into chocolate and spice over a 16-hour steep. Pour-over works too, though you'll want a slightly coarser grind and slower pour to avoid over-extracting the heavier compounds.
