Sudan Pressbook

This rare pressbook for the expedition film 'Sudan' offers a remarkable window into the marketing machinery of early exploitation cinema. Produced by Foy Productions, Ltd. and featuring footage shot by Major C. Court Treatt, F.R.G.S., the film promised audiences 'savage scenes of Africa never before recorded' and 'wild animals of the jungle never before filmed.' The pressbook showcases multiple poster designs available to theater exhibitors, including a dramatic one-sheet featuring a screaming woman menaced by snarling lions, and a three-sheet depicting armed tribesmen atop charging elephants. The bold red and black two-color printing creates maximum visual impact, with the title 'SUDAN' rendered in dimensional Art Deco lettering. A fascinating document of colonial-era cinema and its sensationalized presentation of African subjects, this pressbook survives as a rare piece of film advertising history from the transition to sound era. Essential material for collectors of pre-Code cinema ephemera and early exploitation film marketing.
