Perfect for: Bag Over Bar — Throw bags over progressively higher bars (common in strongman competitions) Weight for Height — Throw for maximum height over a crossbar Throwing Medleys — Multiple throws in timed events Competition Training — Practice your technique and build explosive power Unlike traditional sandbags designed for carries, squats, or loaded movements, throwing bags are specifically engineered for repeated overhead throws without the bag breaking apart or losing integrity. Competition throwing weights vary significantly by event, weight class, and sanctioning organization. Rather than recommend a specific weight, we encourage you to: Check your competition rules — Different events use different weights (commonly 25, 35, 45, 50, or 56 lbs for various divisions) Train at competition weight — Once you know your competition weight, fill your bag to match exactly Add a technique bag — Many throwers own a second lighter bag (15-25 lbs) for warm-ups and technique practice Consider an overload bag — Some advanced competitors train with a heavier bag (10-15 lbs over competition weight) to build extra power 💡 Pro Tip: Serious competitors often own 2-3 throwing bags: one light for technique work, one at exact competition weight, and one heavy for overload training. Filling Options: Sand: Most common. Can hold up to 60 lbs. Available at any hardware store. Rubber Mulch: Lighter option. Can hold up to 25 lbs. Good for technique work or lighter weight classes. Pea Gravel: Denser than sand. Use with caution as it's heavier and harder on the bag over time. Competition Credentials Freedom Strength Throwing Bags are used by serious strongman competitors and in major competitions nationwide: Pro Strongman League Events — Used in official competitions America's Strongest Man & Woman — Competition-tested and approved Regional & Local Competitions — Used across the country in strongman throwing events Built with the same attention to quality and durability as our competition-proven Strongman Sandbags (900+ five-star reviews). How to Fill Your Throwing Bag 📋 Click to View Step-by-Step Filling Instructions What you'll need: Dry play sand, pea gravel, or rubber mulch (available at any hardware store) Bathroom or postal scale Step-by-step process: Remove throwing bag from package Open Velcro closure and unzip the bag Pull out the built-in funnel and filler bag Make sure the internal filler bag is fully open inside the outer shell Begin pouring your filler material slowly into the funnel Periodically lift and drop the bag to pack down the material and eliminate air pockets Use a scale to check weight as you approach your target When you reach desired weight, close the funnel tightly Push the funnel down into the bag opening Zip closed and secure with Velcro Start throwing! ⚠️ Important: Do not overfill beyond 60 lbs of sand or 25 lbs of rubber mulch. Overfilling can stress seams and reduce bag longevity. Recommended Surfaces: Use on rubber flooring, grass, or other non-abrasive surfaces to maximize bag life. Avoid repeatedly throwing on concrete or rough asphalt. Frequently Asked Questions What's the difference between a Throwing Bag and a Strongman Sandbag? Throwing Bags are specifically designed for overhead throwing events like Bag Over Bar and Weight for Height. They have a single handle optimized for throwing technique and are built with 1680D Cordura Ballistic fabric to withstand repeated throws. Strongman Sandbags have no handles (full-body grip challenge) and are designed for carries, squats, cleans, presses, and general strongman training. They're more versatile but not optimized for throwing. If you need to train throwing events, get a Throwing Bag. If you want maximum exercise variety, get a Strongman Sandbag. Many athletes own both. How does Freedom Strength compare to Cerberus throwing bags? Material: Freedom Strength uses 1680D Cordura Ballistic (60% thicker) vs Cerberus's 1000D Cordura. Our material is significantly more durable for repeated throws. Rating: Freedom Strength 4.96★ vs Cerberus 4.97★ — essentially equivalent quality. Competition Use: Both used in Pro Strongman League competitions. Bottom line: Superior material durability at comparable price and rating. How does Freedom Strength compare to Rogue throwing bags? Material: Freedom Strength uses 1680D Cordura Ballistic vs Rogue's 500D + 1000D Cordura mix. Our material is significantly tougher. Rating: Freedom Strength 4.96★ vs Rogue 4.8★ — Freedom Strength has higher customer satisfaction. Price: Freedom Strength $129.99 vs Rogue $155 — better value with superior material. Capacity: Rogue holds 75 lbs vs Freedom Strength 60 lbs, but our 1680D material is more durable for repeated throws. Bottom line: Superior material, higher rating, better price. Can I use this for kettlebell-style exercises like swings or snatches? Throwing Bags are purpose-built for throwing, not for kettlebell-style movements. While you could technically swing them, they're not optimized for that use. What should I fill my Throwing Bag with? We recommend dry play sand for most users. It's available at any hardware store (Home Depot, Lowe's), affordable, and provides good weight. Do not use wet or damp sand as moisture can degrade the bag over time. Alternative fillers: Rubber mulch: Lighter option (up to 25 lbs max). Good for technique work or lighter competition weights. Pea gravel: Denser than sand but harder on the bag. Use with caution. Can I slam this bag on the ground or use it for tire drags? No. Throwing Bags are designed for overhead throws, not ground slams or tire drags. Slamming the bag repeatedly on hard surfaces or dragging it across rough terrain will significantly reduce its lifespan and is not covered under warranty. What weight should I start with? The right weight depends entirely on your competition's requirements. Different strongman events use different weights for different weight classes and divisions. We recommend: Check your specific competition rules for required throwing weights Fill your bag to match that exact weight Consider getting a second lighter bag (15-25 lbs) for technique practice and warm-ups Advanced competitors often train with an overload bag 10-15 lbs heavier than competition weight Pro tip: It's better to train with the exact weight you'll use in competition rather than estimate. Competition throwing is a technical skill that requires precise practice. How long will my Throwing Bag last? With proper care and use on appropriate surfaces (rubber flooring, grass, turf), your Throwing Bag should last for thousands of throws. To maximize longevity: Use on rubber mats, grass, or other soft surfaces Avoid throwing on concrete or rough asphalt Don't overfill beyond max capacity (60 lbs sand / 25 lbs rubber mulch) Store in a dry location when not in use Inspect stitching periodically for wear Like all training equipment, Throwing Bags are wear items and will eventually show signs of use, especially under heavy competition training. Our 1680D Cordura Ballistic fabric is the toughest in the industry and significantly outlasts competitors' bags made with 1000D or 1050D fabric. Do you offer a warranty?
