This powerful limited-edition linocut by Carlos Barberena addresses the humanitarian crisis facing the Yanomami people and the devastating effects of illegal gold mining on their ancestral lands. Titled Fora Garimpo, the work pairs a commanding portrait with the direct message “Stop Mining Yanomami Lands,” transforming the traditional medium of relief printing into a contemporary call for awareness. Barberena hand-carved the linoleum block and printed each impression by hand using wood type on a Vandercook SP20 letterpress, with a transparent red layer screen printed over the image. The bold black, red, and natural kraft palette gives the composition an immediate graphic presence while emphasizing the figure at its center. The work responds to the displacement, disease, malnutrition, environmental destruction, and mercury contamination associated with illegal gold mining in Yanomami territory. Published by La Onda Grafica in Houston, Texas, Fora Garimpo reflects Barberena’s use of printmaking to engage with contemporary social and humanitarian issues. Printed by hand on archival 100lb French paper, this example is number 17 from a limited edition of 100, signed and numbered by the artist. Size: 24.0" x 18.0" Artist: Barberena Condition: Very Good, Age-appropriate wear, fading and toning. Please use the photo zoom feature to get a better understanding of overall condition.
