Stonehenge® Yew

Stonehenge® Yew (Taxus x media 'SMNTHDC') solves the challenge every gardener eventually faces: finding an elegant evergreen that stays narrow enough for tight spaces but tall enough to create real privacy. This columnar selection from Proven Winners® reaches 8 to 10 feet tall while staying just 2 to 4 feet wide, making it the perfect choice for foundation plantings, narrow side yards, or anywhere you need vertical structure without horizontal spread. Year-Round Elegance in Any Light What sets Stonehenge® Yew apart from other columnar evergreens is its remarkable adaptability to light conditions. Most narrow evergreens demand full sun and struggle in shade, but this yew thrives in everything from blazing sun to dense shade. The deep green needles maintain their rich color year-round regardless of exposure, though growth is faster in brighter conditions. This versatility makes it invaluable for those challenging spots under eaves, along north-facing walls, or tucked into shaded corners where arborvitae and boxwood simply won't perform. The fine-textured foliage grows densely along upright branches, creating a naturally formal appearance without constant maintenance. Unlike many columnar conifers that develop bare patches at the base as they age, Stonehenge® Yew stays full from ground to tip. The soft green needles provide a refined backdrop for flowering shrubs and perennials throughout the growing season, then take center stage in winter when the garden needs evergreen structure most. Space-Saving Solutions for Modern Landscapes Urban and suburban landscapes increasingly demand plants that deliver impact without consuming precious square footage. Stonehenge® Yew answers that need perfectly. Plant them 2 feet apart for a solid privacy screen that reaches maturity faster, or space them 3 to 4 feet apart for individual specimens that maintain distinct columnar forms. The narrow footprint makes this yew ideal for flanking entryways, defining property lines, screening utility areas, or creating garden rooms in smaller yards. This yew works beautifully in containers as well, bringing evergreen presence to patios, decks, or urban balconies. The moderate growth rate of 6 to 12 inches per year gives you control over the mature size while still providing steady progress toward your landscaping goals. Unlike fast-growing evergreens that require constant shearing, Stonehenge® Yew develops its elegant shape naturally and maintains it with minimal intervention. Proven Performance with Low Maintenance Stonehenge® Yew is a hybrid between English Yew and Japanese Yew, combining the formal elegance of European garden yews with the cold hardiness needed for northern landscapes. Hardy through zones 4 to 7, it withstands winter temperatures well below zero while maintaining its deep green color. The plant tolerates urban conditions including air pollution and reflected heat from buildings, making it reliable for city gardens and suburban streetscapes. Drought tolerance develops once roots are established, typically after the first growing season. Mature plants need supplemental water only during extended dry spells, making this an excellent choice for water-conscious landscapes. The dense evergreen foliage provides nesting sites for birds and year-round shelter for small wildlife, while the tough constitution requires no special coddling. Design Versatility from Formal to Natural Use Stonehenge® Yew as a vertical accent in mixed borders, plant them in a staggered row for an informal screen, or shear them into a tight formal hedge. The fine texture contrasts beautifully with bold-leaved perennials like hostas or brunnera in shade, or with ornamental grasses and flowering shrubs in sunnier spots. Plant them to frame views, create living architecture, or anchor corners of the house where foundation plantings need height without width. This yew adapts to both traditional and contemporary design styles. It brings the timeless elegance of classic English gardens while fitting seamlessly into modern minimalist landscapes. Whether you need a single specimen to punctuate an entryway or a lineup to screen neighbors, Stonehenge® Yew delivers refined evergreen presence without demanding the space or maintenance that larger evergreens require.
