Step Poles for Pool Fence Elevation Challenges Step Poles are extended-length pool fence poles used to manage steps, raised planters, pony walls, retaining walls, and other elevation changes that cannot be handled with a standard fence pole. They are commonly used for a technique called flagging, in which the mesh extends from a lower elevation and attaches higher on a longer pole. This can eliminate the need to drill near the edge or bullnose of a step, where a hole may have inadequate clearance, leave a visible sleeve, or cause cracking and long-term damage. Step Poles are available in 6-foot and 8-foot lengths and must be measured, cut, and fabricated to match the specific elevation change and fence layout. When Is a Step Pole Needed? Not every elevation change requires a Step Pole. In some installations, a 4-foot fence may only need a standard 5-foot fence pole to accommodate the change in height. You can purchase a standard pool fence pole —no Step Pole is needed. Step Poles are available in 6-foot and 8-foot lengths for installations where a standard fence pole is not long enough, including certain steps, raised planters, pony walls, and retaining walls. They must be measured and cut for the specific installation. Important Construction Difference Step Poles are extended poles intended for specialized elevation transitions. They do not contain the same reinforcement as All-Safe®’s standard pool fence poles and should not be treated as a direct substitute for a regular fence pole. Choosing the Correct Step Pole Steps 10 inches or less: A Step Pole and properly fabricated flagged panel may be suitable. Elevation changes over 10 inches: A taller, independently fabricated panel is generally recommended to reduce climbability. Larger transitions: An Angled Raised Panel (ARP) may be required for pony walls, retaining walls, or substantial changes in elevation. Edge clearance: Drill holes should generally remain at least 2½ inches from the edge of concrete, coping, or steps. The correct solution depends on the height change, available drilling area, pole spacing, fence tension, and the surrounding structure. What Is Flagging? Flagging allows the bottom of the mesh to follow a change in elevation while the mesh remains attached to an extended Step Pole. The pole is cut and fabricated for the specific location so the fence remains properly aligned and tensioned. Flagging requires modification of the mesh, molding, and pole assembly. Trim-to-fit and double-molding techniques may be needed to remove wrinkles and create a secure, finished transition. Angled Raised Panels For larger elevation changes, All-Safe® offers an Angled Raised Panel, or ARP. This specialized panel has a sewn 45-degree transition that allows the fence to move between two elevations while maintaining tension and coverage. ARP panels require careful measurement and layout. Please contact All-Safe® before ordering if you are unsure whether your project requires a Step Pole, flagged panel, or ARP. Important Installation Notice Step Poles are not a universal solution for every elevation change. Incorrect placement or fabrication can create excessive gaps, climbing opportunities, poor tension, or damage to the surrounding surface. This is an advanced installation technique. Professional installation is recommended unless you have the tools and experience required to measure, cut, drill, and modify removable mesh pool fencing. Shipping Notice Due to their extended length, Step Poles may incur additional shipping charges.
