I'm betting most of you have never grown star-flowered chickweed in your garden. Am I right? Stellaria pubera is the well-behaved US native (Massachusetts south to Florida) cousin of the evil, weedy European chickweed, Stellaria media, which also hogs all the search engine results. We're trying to change that with our 2021 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of the first ever named selection from a Zac Hill collection in Montgomery County, NC. Stellaria pubera 'Chick-a-boom' forms a tight 6" tall x 2' wide clump of dense foliage, topped, starting for us in mid-March and continuing through mid-April with hundreds of small white star-shaped flowers. We're pretty sure it's a tetraploid form, since its leaf size and growth is so aberrantly huge. Stellaria pubera doesn't run, and after 4 years of gardening with it, we have yet to see a single seedling. Light shade to morning sun and average soils are best for this amazing woodland perennial.
