Weninger | 2018 ‘Steiner’ Sopron Kékfrankos

Steiner Sopron Kékfrankos is a distinctive red wine produced in the Sopron region of Hungary, an area renowned for its rich winemaking tradition. The winery, Steiner, is committed to sustainable viticulture and traditional winemaking practices, ensuring that each bottle reflects the unique terroir of the region. Grape Variety & Terroir: Kékfrankos, also known as Blaufränkisch in Austria and Germany, is the flagship grape variety of the Sopron region. The vineyards are situated on mineral-rich soils, influenced by the nearby Lake Neusiedl, which provides a unique microclimate ideal for growing Kékfrankos. This grape is known for producing wines with vibrant acidity, deep color, and robust tannins. Winemaking: The grapes are hand-harvested and undergo fermentation in stainless steel to preserve the freshness and fruity characteristics of the wine. The wine is then aged in large oak barrels, which adds subtle complexity without overpowering the fruit flavors. Flavor Profile: Steiner Sopron Kékfrankos typically exhibits aromas of dark berries, black cherry, and plum, with hints of pepper, earth, and a touch of smokiness. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with bright acidity, fine tannins, and flavors of red and black fruits, complemented by a spicy finish. The wine’s structure and freshness make it both approachable and versatile. Pairings: This Kékfrankos pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes, including roasted meats, grilled sausages, and hearty stews. It also complements dishes with earthy flavors, such as mushroom risotto or roasted root vegetables, and pairs well with hard cheeses.
