It allows products like Pest Regards to maintain their quality and shelf life while remaining compatible with naturally derived formulations. Although GeoGuard ECT is approved for use in many natural and ECOCERT/COSMOS-style formulations, it is a nature-derived preservative rather than an essential oil or botanical extract. It is included in a very small amount solely to help ensure the product remains safe and effective throughout normal use.   I would also consider adding this short note near the bottom of the product page: Why use a preservative? Because this spray contains aloe vera and witch hazel (water-based ingredients), a preservative is essential to help prevent the growth of bacteria, mold, and yeast. We chose GeoGuard ECT because it is highly effective while fitting our commitment to thoughtfully selected, naturally derived ingredients.
