Star Anise Illicium verum is as beautiful as it is delicious. Reminiscent of a licorice taste, star anise has many culinary uses and also makes a wonderful stand alone tea, or can be used in blends. Naturally sweet, light bodied, and low astringency, star anise pairs well with licorice root, ginger, clove, peppercorn, cinnamon, full bodied coffee, black tea, and many savory and sweet culinary dishes. It is also found in our Caffeinated and Non-Caffeinated spicy chai masala blends Star Anise is also full of bioflavonoids and polyphenols, and has been used medicinally for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine. Currently, star anise is the primary source of shikimic acid used for pharmaceutical product development in anti-viral drugs used to fight influenza.
