Buffalo Trace Distillery Stagg Jr. 130 Proof 750ml (Batch 7) (2016)

The 2016 release of Stagg Jr. Barrel Proof Bourbon is a bold and uncompromised expression of American whiskey craftsmanship. Unfiltered and bottled at a robust 130 proof, this bourbon delivers an intense symphony of dark fruit, rich caramel, and powerful oak, culminating in an unforgettable, lingering finish. A true connoisseur's delight, it offers an unadulterated experience of classic Kentucky bourbon character. Tasting Notes Nose: A powerful and intoxicating bouquet immediately greets the senses, bursting with rich dark cherry, stewed plums, and dried figs. Underlying notes of caramelized sugar, molasses, and vanilla bean intertwine with hints of toasted oak, baking spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, clove), and a faint whisper of dark chocolate-covered espresso beans. The high proof is present but well-integrated, adding a warming sensation rather than an alcohol burn. Palate: The entry is an assertive explosion of flavor, coating the palate with a thick, viscous texture. Intense sweet notes of brown sugar, maple syrup, and dark caramel are quickly met with a robust wave of dark fruit – black cherry, blackberry compote, and a touch of ripe fig. The proof makes its presence known, delivering a delightful warmth that accentuates the bold spice profile of black pepper, allspice, and red chili flake. A profound oak influence emerges, bringing notes of cured tobacco, leather, and a pleasant char, all balanced by bitter cocoa and a hint of roasted nuts. Finish: Long, lingering, and incredibly complex. The finish slowly subsides with echoes of dark fruit and sweet oak, evolving into dry spice, worn leather, and a delightful, almost endless warmth. Notes of tobacco leaf, espresso, and a faint whisper of smoke persist, leaving a satisfying and memorable impression on the back of the tongue and throat. The heat is persistent but never overwhelming, a testament to its masterful barrel proof bottling.
