Saint Benedict (480-547) was born in the district of Nursia (present-day Norcia), in Umbria, central Italy. He is regarded as the “Father of Western Monasticism” and is “Co-patron of Europe” along with Saints Cyril and Methodius. St. Benedict is often pictured with a bell, a broken tray, a raven, or a crosier. His feast day is celebrated on July 11. Many prayers ask Saint Benedict to shield them from evil, temptations, and the snares of the devil. Prayers often implore Saint Benedict to intercede with God for favors and graces needed for daily life and spiritual growth.
