Square Notes

Grouped into five sections (Symbols, Simple Neums, Rhythm, Special Neums, and Modes), Square Notes clarifies the basics of Gregorian chant. Every fundamental of chant is covered with a short explanation followed by written exercises to be done in the workbook—fill in the blank, identifying notes, writing notation, drawing rhythmic waves, and much more. From the Preface: "This book has been prepared to fill a great need in our Catholic schools—a thorough and accurate presentation of the fundamentals of Gregorian Chant. However, the theoretical material presented here should never be considered as an end in itself. It is intended only as a gateway to a fuller participation in the Liturgy of Holy Mother Church through a more beautiful rendition of Her official music. Although this workbook was primarily intended for our elementary schools, it need not be restricted to that area. Choirs, classes in music education, or even novitiates may find it helpful as an introduction to Gregorian Chant .... It is sincerely hoped that both teachers and students will find this book as helpful as it is intended to be and that because of it, they will come to love and appreciate a truly beautiful form of music—Gregorian Chant." Arsis, Punctum, Virga, Ictus, Chironomy, Undulation, Climacus, Torculus, Bar Lines, Scandicus, Modes, Quilisma ... if it's Greek to you, here's a good place to start! Need a little refresher?
