Spotted Geranium

Spotted Geranium (Geranium maculatum)Spotted Geranium is a native woodland perennial that brings a calm, natural look to shady borders while still feeling polished and intentional. In spring, it lifts the planting with soft pink to lilac flowers, then settles into a leafy clump that helps fill gaps and cover soil. It is especially useful in part shade, including under open tree canopies, where it blends easily with ferns, hostas, and spring bulbs. If you want an easy, reliable layer that supports pollinators and looks at home in a wide range of gardens, this is a strong choice. Distinctive FeaturesThis clump-forming geranium produces five-petaled flowers in pale pink to rosy pink or lilac tones, typically blooming in mid to late spring with occasional lighter repeat bloom. The deeply lobed green foliage adds texture and often forms a full, upright mound that reads as clean and natural. In hotter, drier conditions the foliage can yellow or thin in midsummer, but the plant typically rebounds with moisture and a light trim. It is valued for its woodland adaptability, spring color, and steady performance in mixed plantings. Growing Conditions Sun: Part shade is ideal, and it also grows in full sun when given consistent moisture. Soil: Rich, well-drained soil with organic matter is best, though it adapts to average garden soils with decent drainage. Water: Medium moisture supports the best growth, and water during dry spells to keep foliage looking fresh. USDA Zones: USDA Zones 3 to 8. Drainage: Avoid persistently wet soil to reduce crown stress and encourage longer-lived clumps. Seasonal Habit: Growth may slow or foliage may decline in summer heat, especially if soils run dry. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Plant a small drift near the front of a shade border so the spring flowers create a bright, close-up highlight at ground level. Woodland Gardens: Use under open tree canopies where dappled light supports strong spring bloom. Bulb Companions: Pair with daffodils and other spring bulbs to add leafy structure as bulbs finish. Shade Borders: Mix with ferns, hostas, heucheras, and astilbes for a layered, natural look. Native-Style Plantings: Use in informal groupings to add spring color and support native bees and other pollinators. Low Maintenance Care Shearing: Trim back after flowering or during midsummer slump to refresh foliage and keep the clump tidy. Watering: Water during extended dry periods to reduce summer decline and support healthier foliage. Mulching: Mulch lightly to conserve moisture and improve soil, keeping mulch off the crown for airflow. Cleanup: Remove yellowing leaves as needed to keep the planting neat and improve airflow in humid weather. Division: Divide in early spring or fall if the clump becomes crowded or if you want to expand plantings. Why Choose Spotted Geranium? Spring Bloom: Pink to lilac flowers bring early season color when many shade perennials are just waking up. Woodland Strength: Performs well in part shade and tolerates root competition common under trees. Mature Size: Typically grows about 12 to 24 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide. Pollinator Value: Flowers support a range of spring pollinators, including native bees. Deer Resistance: Often considered deer and rabbit tolerant, though browsing pressure can vary by location. If you want a spring-blooming perennial that looks at home in shade and helps your beds feel more complete, Spotted Geranium is an easy addition. Plant it in part shade with well-drained soil and steady moisture during establishment, then water during dry spells for best performance. With a simple trim after flowering, it stays neat and continues to support a healthy, layered planting through the season.
