About SpongeBob SquarePants - Horror Episodes (1999-present) SpongeBob SquarePants has produced several episodes that affectionately parody horror conventions, most notably "Graveyard Shift" (the Hash-Slinging Slasher), "I Was a Teenage Gary" (body horror transformation), and various Halloween specials. "I Was a Teenage Gary" features a surprisingly disturbing snail transformation sequence that traumatized a generation of young viewers with its body horror imagery. The show's creators, led by marine biologist Stephen Hillenburg, incorporated horror elements as part of their commitment to entertainment that works on multiple levels for different age groups. These horror-themed episodes demonstrate how the language of scary movies has become so embedded in popular culture that even a children's cartoon can effectively reference and parody genre conventions.
