Appearance: Feather Color: The Brassy Back Old English Game Bantam is particularly noted for its "brassy" feathers. This term refers to the bird's golden or orange back feathers, which give it a bright, metallic sheen. The back is typically a deep gold or copper color, with the wings, breast, and tail often darker, usually black, creating a striking contrast. Body Type: True to its game bird heritage, the Brassy Back Old English Game Bantam is slim and athletic. It has a compact and muscular build, making it agile and energetic. These bantams have an upright posture and a strong, graceful presence despite their small size. Tail: The tail of the Brassy Back Old English Game Bantam is high-set and carried upright. The long tail feathers, often sweeping back, give the bird an elegant and refined look. The tail is one of the breed’s most notable features, contributing to its graceful appearance. Comb and Wattles: The Brassy Back Old English Game Bantam features a small, single comb, which is upright and proportionate to its size. The comb is typically bright red, and the wattles are small but vibrant, adding a contrast against the bird's colorful plumage. Legs and Toes: The legs of the Brassy Back Old English Game Bantam are clean, yellow, and relatively short. The bird has three toes on each foot, which is common among bantams. The yellow legs complement the vibrant coloration of the feathers. Temperament: Active and Spirited: Like most Old English Game Bantams, the Brassy Back variety is known for its high energy and activity levels. They are agile, quick, and love to forage and explore. These bantams are often on the move, scratching around in the yard or free-range area. Independent and Courageous: The Brassy Back Old English Game Bantam is a courageous bird, and it can be somewhat independent, which is typical for game breeds. While not necessarily aggressive, these bantams can be territorial and sometimes dominant, especially within a mixed flock. Good for Free-Range: These bantams thrive in free-range environments where they can roam and forage. Their active nature means they need space to move around and express themselves. They are very capable foragers and enjoy searching for insects and seeds. Not Ideal for Small Flocks: Due to their energetic and sometimes dominant nature, they may not always be a good fit for smaller or more passive flocks. They can occasionally clash with other chickens, particularly larger or more docile breeds. Egg Laying: Moderate Egg Production: Brassy Back Old English Game Bantams are not prolific egg layers. Like most game bantams, they typically lay small white eggs, averaging about 2-3 eggs per week. These eggs are small, but the quality is excellent. Egg Size and Quality: The eggs laid by the Brassy Back Old English Game Bantam are small, as is typical of bantams, but they are prized for their flavor and freshness. While they don’t lay in large quantities, the eggs they produce are still of high quality. Health and Care: Hardy: Despite their small size, Brassy Back Old English Game Bantams are quite hardy. They can tolerate a variety of climates, but like all chickens, they need protection from extreme weather conditions. In particularly cold climates, the small size and single comb may make them susceptible to frostbite, so it’s important to provide them with shelter during the winter months. Low Maintenance: These bantams require minimal grooming. Their sleek feathers are easy to maintain, and they are generally healthy and resilient. As with all chickens, they should be checked for parasites like mites or lice, but otherwise, they don’t require special attention. Flight Risk: Old English Game Bantams, including the Brassy Back variety, are capable of short flights due to their small size and agility. It’s essential to have a secure yard or pen with a sufficiently high fence to keep them contained and protect them from predators. Show and Ornamental Qualities: Poultry Shows: The Brassy Back Old English Game Bantam is highly prized in poultry shows due to its stunning color and athletic build. The breed's elegant tail, vibrant plumage, and lively personality make it a favorite among show enthusiasts. Ornamental Value: Besides being shown in competitions, the Brassy Back Old English Game Bantam is also kept for ornamental purposes. Their beautiful coloration and active personality make them an ideal bird for backyard flocks, particularly those looking to add beauty and elegance.
