Spineless prickly pear

Spineless Prickly Pear (Opuntia sp.) is the prickly pear for people who love the plant but not the prickles. Unlike its spiny cousins, this variety is completely spineless — making it safe to handle, harvest, and grow around kids, pets, and bare hands. Each order includes one healthy pad, ready to root. Within a short time you'll see it establish and begin pushing out new growth. As it matures, it produces flowers unlike any typical prickly pear — large, showy blooms more reminiscent of dragon fruit than the classic Opuntia flower, hinting at what's to come. The fruit — known as tuna — lives up to that promise. Fuller, juicier, and with a subtle dragon fruit-like flavor, it's a step above the average prickly pear. Enjoy it fresh, blended into drinks, or used to make vibrant syrups and jams. And don't overlook the young pads — harvested tender, they make excellent nopales for grilling, sautéing, or adding to tacos and salads. Low-maintenance, drought-tolerant once established, and endlessly rewarding — this is a standout addition to any edible garden, cactus collection, or Florida-friendly landscape. Growing tips: Allow the pad to callous for 2–3 days before planting in well-draining soil. Full sun preferred. Water sparingly until rooted.
