Villarreal Oranges, Spanish Crate Label

This Spanish citrus crate label from the mid-1960s captures the sun-drenched agricultural heritage of the Valencia region. Produced for the Cooperativa Agricola Cosecheros de Naranja in Villarreal, the design centers on a charming gray bird perched atop three luminous oranges, their textured peels rendered with near-photographic precision against a warm yellow ground. The bold chromolithographic technique showcases the technical prowess of Valencia's printing industry, which served the region's massive citrus export trade. The striking blue background and curved red-orange text band create a design that was meant to catch the eye of buyers in distant European markets, branding these oranges as premium Spanish fruit. A delightful example of commercial art from Franco-era Spain, this label documents the cooperative agricultural system that transformed small farmers into international exporters. The telegram address and registration numbers speak to an era when Spanish oranges traveled by rail and ship to tables across Europe. A charming piece for collectors of fruit crate labels or Mediterranean ephemera. Size: 9.5" x 10.75" Condition: Very Good, Age-appropriate wear. Paper toning in accordance with the print's age.
