Published in Moscow by Energia in 1977, this Soviet industrial safety poster warns workers about the dangers of mercury-containing lamps. It was created by N. V. Saburov, with artwork by V. L. Kondratyev. The familiar skull-and-crossbones warning symbol is recreated using fluorescent tubes, while the skull contains the words “Lamps Containing Mercury.” The imagery communicates the potential danger of mercury exposure associated with fluorescent lighting and the need for careful handling. Produced for the trade union representing workers at power stations and in the electrical industry, the poster documents Soviet efforts to promote occupational safety as fluorescent lighting became widely used in industrial and public settings.
