This Soviet transportation poster from the early 1960s illustrates the ambitious economic goals of the 1961 Communist Party Program. Aircraft, locomotives, ships, trucks, and passenger cars represent the major forms of transportation considered essential to the growth of the Soviet economy. At the center of the design, a large red arrow projects a threefold increase in railway freight capacity by 1980. The accompanying text states that the continued growth of the national economy required the accelerated development of all forms of transportation. Produced during the Khrushchev era, the poster reflects a period of ambitious long-term planning in the Soviet Union. Railways remained especially important for transporting coal, steel, grain, and manufactured goods across the country’s vast territory. Posters like this presented economic targets to the public while promoting confidence in the Soviet Union’s future industrial development.
