Welding Safety, Soviet Propaganda

Created by Soviet artist E. G. Ryazin and published by Moscow’s state energy press Energoatomizdat in July 1986, this industrial safety poster warns workers about the toxic fumes produced when welding non-ferrous metals such as copper, zinc, and aluminum. The Russian text instructs: “When welding non-ferrous metals, work in a respirator.” Rather than illustrating the danger literally, Ryazin transforms the invisible fumes into a rainbow-colored serpent rising from the welder’s torch. With its exaggerated eyes and winding body, the fumes become a playful but threatening character headed directly toward an oversized respirator. The unusual combination of humor and danger makes the safety message immediately understandable and difficult to ignore. Workplace safety posters formed a distinctive category of Soviet graphic design, displayed in factories, workshops, and other industrial settings to communicate technical hazards through bold, memorable imagery. The teal background, flowing bands of color, and surreal personification of toxic fumes demonstrate the creativity artists could bring to otherwise practical government messaging. Published only months after the Chernobyl disaster, the poster also dates from a period when industrial hazards and workplace safety were becoming increasingly visible subjects within the Soviet Union. Complete production information along the lower margin identifies the artist, editor, publisher, and Tula printing facility, preserving an unusually detailed record of its state production. A wonderfully imaginative example of late-Soviet industrial design, the poster turns a serious occupational hazard into an unexpectedly humorous and visually memorable warning.
