Ready for Labor & Defense, Soviet Propaganda

This original 1977 Soviet propaganda poster promotes the GTO, or “Ready for Labor and Defense,” a nationwide physical fitness program that encouraged Soviet citizens to participate in athletics and meet government fitness standards. Established in 1931 and renewed with updated standards in the 1970s, the program connected physical health and recreation with the Soviet ideal of an active, capable citizen. Here, the focus is on winter sports, particularly skiing, a popular part of Soviet recreational and sporting culture. Created by artists L. Nepomnyashchy and M. Lukyanov, the poster takes a cheerful and decorative approach to its message. The skiers wear clothing covered in intricate patterns inspired by traditional Russian folk textiles, blending familiar cultural motifs with contemporary Soviet graphic design. Above them appears the GTO emblem, featuring an athlete ready to ski surrounded by the words “Ready for Labor and Defense of the USSR.” Published in Moscow by the state publishing house Izdatelstvo Plakat and printed at the Kalinin Polygraphic Combine, the poster was issued in a substantial run of 100,000 copies and originally cost just 10 kopecks. Intended for display in schools, sports facilities, workplaces, and other public spaces, it represents the friendlier side of Soviet propaganda, using recreation, folk-inspired design, and an inviting winter scene to encourage participation in a state-sponsored fitness program.
