Threat of AIDS, Soviet Propaganda

Created by Soviet artist V. Zhelobinsky with verse by V. Shumilina, this late-Soviet public health poster warns against the growing threat of AIDS. It was produced as part of the For Your Health!! series and associated with the celebrated Leningrad poster collective Fighting Pencil (Боевой Карандаш), founded in 1939 and known for its sharp satirical and propaganda imagery. At the center, a skeletal hand becomes a symbol of death, with the Cyrillic letters “СПИД” (AIDS) cleverly incorporated into the bones themselves. Within its grasp are figures and objects representing behaviors Soviet authorities associated with the spread of the disease, including alcohol, prostitution and drug use. American dollar bills add another distinctly Soviet element, connecting perceived social dangers with Western influence. The accompanying verse delivers an equally forceful warning, comparing AIDS to both plague and the “breath of death.” The combination of frightening imagery, wordplay and direct language reflects the dramatic approach frequently used in Soviet public health campaigns. The poster comes from the glasnost era, when the Soviet Union began addressing AIDS more openly after initially minimizing the emerging epidemic. Its strongly moralistic message offers a revealing look at how Soviet authorities framed the disease not only as a public health crisis, but as a consequence of behaviors considered socially dangerous or morally corrupt. Published in Leningrad by Khudozhnik RSFSR, the poster is a fascinating document of the Soviet Union’s changing public health messaging during its final years. Size: 17.5" x 13" Artist: V.
