Drink Apple Juice, Ukrainian SSR Propaganda

This Ukrainian-language Soviet advertising poster from the late 1960s promotes apple juice sold through Ukrkoopspilka, the Ukrainian Consumer Cooperative Union. The cheerful message translates to “Delicious, Healing, In Any Season,” presenting apple juice as a wholesome beverage to be enjoyed year-round. Ukrkoopspilka operated an extensive network of cooperative stores and played an important role in distributing everyday goods throughout Soviet Ukraine. Advertising within a planned economy worked differently than it did in the West: rather than persuading shoppers to choose one competing brand over another, posters like this helped promote available domestic products and encouraged particular patterns of consumption. Food advertisements frequently emphasized health, abundance and the benefits of locally produced goods. Both a charming piece of food advertising and a document of everyday Soviet life, the poster reveals a more colorful side of the period's visual culture. Its Ukrainian-language typography and regional cooperative branding also distinguish it from the Russian-language Soviet advertising more commonly encountered today.
