Train Off Schedule, Lithuanian SSR Film

This 1986 Lithuanian movie poster promotes the Soviet adventure film Train Out of Schedule, a suspenseful story centered on a young railway worker attempting to stop a runaway train. Produced for audiences in the Lithuanian SSR, the poster features the film’s title in both Lithuanian and Russian, reflecting the multilingual distribution of Soviet cinema across the Baltic republics. Artist V. Baltys conveys the film’s sense of danger without relying on a conventional movie scene. A large silhouetted figure stretches his arms outward in warning against a vivid red-orange background, while a smaller teal figure rushes toward the fragmented form of a locomotive below. The opposing figures, sharp diagonals and intense blocks of color create an immediate feeling of speed, urgency and impending disaster. The film itself was produced by Odessa Film Studio in Soviet Ukraine, while this poster was designed and printed in Vilnius specifically for Lithuanian audiences. Its bilingual presentation provides an interesting record of how films circulated between the USSR’s individual republics, with locally produced promotional material adapting nationally distributed cinema for regional audiences. With its abstraction and unconventional treatment of the runaway-train narrative, the poster is a compelling example of late Soviet Baltic graphic design. Created during the early years of glasnost, it also comes from the final period of Soviet cultural production before the political transformations that would lead to Lithuanian independence. *Note poster is on very thin stock, characteristic of commercial soviet production from the era.
