Factory Accident Prevention, Soviet Propaganda

This 1974 Soviet industrial safety poster warns workers to properly close utility trenches, cable channels and manholes to prevent dangerous falls. Published by Khimiya (Chemistry Publishing House), it was intended for display in industrial workplaces where visual safety campaigns served as constant reminders of proper procedure. The dramatic composition makes the consequences of carelessness impossible to miss. A worker tumbles backward into an open trench as his hard hat flies from his head and pipes scatter around him. Strong diagonals heighten the sense of sudden movement, while the restrained palette of navy, ochre and pale blue gives the scene the bold graphic clarity characteristic of Soviet industrial design. The poster formed part of the coordinated “General Workplace Safety Measures” series, a campaign addressing common hazards encountered across Soviet industry. Artist G. V. Shubin created the design with conceptual authorship credited to A. A. Bozhko, reflecting the collaborative structure often used in Soviet educational and instructional publishing. Workplace safety posters occupied an important place in Soviet visual culture, appearing throughout factories, construction sites and industrial facilities across the USSR. Designed to communicate quickly and effectively, they transformed practical regulations into memorable images of cause and consequence. This example is particularly striking for its almost cinematic depiction of an accident in progress, capturing both the graphic sophistication and practical purpose of Soviet workplace safety campaigns.
