The tutorials walk you through: Rehydrating your sourdough starter Mixing and developing your dough Bulk fermentation and stretch-and-folds Shaping and using the banneton Scoring with the bread lame Baking in a Dutch oven for the perfect crust Frequently Asked Questions Do I need a Dutch oven to use this kit? A Dutch oven is the best tool for baking sourdough at home — the lid traps steam during the first part of baking, giving you that signature crust and oven spring. It's not included in this kit, but a 5-quart cast iron Dutch oven works perfectly and is widely available for $30–60. How long will it take to bake my first loaf? Plan for about 5 days total: 2–4 days to rehydrate and activate your starter, then 1 day to make the actual dough (which includes an overnight cold proof in the fridge). Your hands-on time is only about 1–2 hours total. Sourdough is mostly waiting. Is this kit beginner-friendly if I've never baked bread before? Yes — it's designed specifically for beginners. The included recipe PDF and QR-code video tutorials walk you through every step. Thousands of first-time bakers have used this kit to bake their first successful sourdough loaf. What flour do I need? Bread flour (11–13% protein) gives the best results for your first loaf. All-purpose flour also works. You'll need about 500g per loaf. Both are available at any grocery store. Can I give this as a gift? Absolutely. It's one of our most popular gifts. The kit is beautifully packaged and includes everything the recipient needs to start baking — they won't need to buy anything else except flour and water. What if I already have some tools — can I just buy the starter? Yes. Our Dehydrated Sourdough Starter is available separately for $15 with free shipping, and comes with the same recipe PDF. Is there a recipe included? Yes — a complete sourdough recipe PDF is emailed to you after purchase, and the QR code on the box links directly to video tutorials covering the entire process from starter to baked loaf. How long does the dehydrated starter last if I don't use it immediately? Stored in a cool, dry location, the dehydrated starter stays viable for 12+ months. It's a great backup to have on hand even after you've established a regular starter. Not Sure Where to Start? Check out our Complete Beginner's Guide to Sourdough on the blog — it covers everything from making your first starter to pulling your first loaf out of the oven.
