The body of an adult human contains about 4 grams (0.005% body weight) of iron, mostly in hemoglobin and myoglobin. Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency in the world. The fraction of iron that is in Earth's crust only amounts to about 5% of the overall mass of the crust and is thus only the fourth most abundant element in that layer (after oxygen, silicon, and aluminum). Iron meteorites are the main form of natural metallic iron on the Earth's surface. Cast iron was first produced in China during the 5th century BC, but rare in Europe until the medieval period. Since pure iron is quite soft, it is most commonly combined with alloying elements to make steel.
