Snowflake Eel

Snowflake Eel (Echidna nebulosa) The Snowflake Eel is one of the most popular and beginner-friendly moray eels in the saltwater aquarium hobby. Instantly recognizable by its cream-colored body covered in bold black, brown, and yellow markings, this fascinating predator adds a dramatic presence to any marine aquarium. Despite its intimidating appearance, the Snowflake Eel is generally peaceful toward fish too large to swallow and is well known for its curious personality and interactive behavior. Native to coral reefs and rocky coastlines throughout the Indo-Pacific, the Snowflake Eel spends its days hidden within caves and crevices, emerging at dusk to hunt crustaceans and other prey. In the home aquarium, it requires a mature system with abundant live rock arranged to create secure caves and tunnels. A tightly fitting lid is absolutely essential, as Snowflake Eels are powerful escape artists capable of squeezing through surprisingly small openings. Unlike many moray eels that specialize in eating fish, the Snowflake Eel primarily feeds on crustaceans in the wild. In captivity, it thrives on a varied diet of shrimp, squid, scallops, clam, krill, silversides, and other marine-based meaty foods. Feeding with aquarium tongs helps establish a consistent feeding routine and keeps the eel healthy. Snowflake Eels are generally compatible with larger reef-safe fish such as tangs, rabbitfish, angelfish, triggers, wrasses, and larger clownfish. However, ornamental shrimp, crabs, and other crustaceans will likely be viewed as food. While they rarely bother corals, they are considered reef safe with caution due to their appetite for mobile invertebrates and their tendency to disturb unsecured rockwork while exploring.
