Snow Hill Meadow Sage

Snow Hill Meadow Sage (Salvia nemorosa 'Snow Hill')Snow Hill Meadow Sage brightens sunny beds with clean white flower spikes that make surrounding colors look richer and more intentional. The compact, clumping habit stays neat at the front of borders, delivering structure even between bloom flushes. It blooms heavily from late spring into early summer, then often repeats with a quick trim, extending the season without complicated care. Pollinators visit constantly, helping your garden feel active and alive. Distinctive FeaturesThis meadow sage is prized for dense spikes of pure white flowers held above aromatic gray-green foliage, creating a crisp, fresh look that fits both modern and cottage-style designs. The plant forms a tight, upright mound that resists flopping, making it easy to repeat in groups for a clean, rhythmic effect. After the first flush, cutting back spent stems typically encourages a second round of bloom later in the season. Mature size is usually about 16 to 20 inches tall in bloom and 12 to 18 inches wide. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun is best for the strongest flowering and the tightest habit, with light shade tolerated. Soil: Well-drained soil is essential, and average to lean soils help maintain a compact form. Water: Water regularly during establishment, then provide moderate to low moisture, watering during extended dry spells. USDA Zones: Zones 4 to 9. Mature Size: About 16 to 20 inches tall in bloom and 12 to 18 inches wide. Deer: Often deer resistant once established due to aromatic foliage. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Plant a tight cluster as a focal point where the white spikes can define the front of a sunny bed and sharpen the overall design. Border Edging: Use along paths and bed edges for a tidy, bright line that stays organized through the season. Mass Planting: Repeat in drifts to create a unified ribbon of white that ties planting areas together. Pollinator Gardens: Include where you want steady bee and butterfly activity during bloom. Color Pairings: Combine with blues, purples, and hot colors to create contrast and make nearby flowers pop. Low Maintenance Care Shearing: Shear back after the first heavy bloom to encourage rebloom and keep the mound tight. Deadheading: Remove spent spikes as needed to extend flowering and maintain a clean look. Watering: Deep water during prolonged drought, especially in the first season and in containers. Fertilizing: Feed lightly in spring, since overly rich soil can soften growth and reduce flowering. Spring Cleanup: Cut back old stems in early spring to make room for fresh new growth.
