Smooth Ambler Contradiction Rye 750ML

Smooth Ambler Contradiction Rye 750ML is a 105-proof (52.5% ABV) blended rye whiskey combining four distinct rye mashbills from three American states. Rated 87 points by Wine Enthusiast, this expression stands apart by deliberately avoiding Kentucky-sourced whiskey, instead pulling liquid from Tennessee, Indiana, and Smooth Ambler's own West Virginia distillery. Quick Facts: ABV: 52.5% (105 Proof)  |  Origin: West Virginia, USA (Multi-State Blend)  |  Style: Blended Rye Whiskey  |  Distillery: Smooth Ambler Spirits Production & Heritage Smooth Ambler Spirits operates out of Maxwelton, West Virginia, in the heart of the Greenbrier Valley. The Contradiction line lives up to its name — it merges whiskey the distillery produces in-house with carefully selected sourced stocks, a practice that requires transparency and blending skill in equal measure. This rye expression weaves together four components: two Tennessee rye whiskeys (one with a 51% rye mashbill, another at 70% rye), a high-rye 95% mashbill from MGP in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, and Smooth Ambler's own 88% rye distilled on-site. Both continuous column and pot distillation methods are represented across the blend, contributing layers of texture and flavor that a single-source rye would struggle to achieve. Tasting Notes Aroma: The nose opens with a classic spice cabinet — cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and allspice arrive in quick succession. Behind the spice sits a quieter layer of stewed apple and faint pinecone resin, giving the aroma an unexpected depth beyond straight rye grain character. Taste: The entry is creamy and full-bodied, immediately revealing the interplay between the four component whiskeys. Mid-palate, rye spice escalates alongside cool mint and bright orange zest. Toasted coconut and vanilla emerge as the proof settles, contributing a richness that tempers the grain-forward heat without masking it. Finish: The finish runs long, led by toasted oak and cinnamon with persistent leather undertones. Green peppercorn spice lingers at the very end, a telltale marker of the high-rye MGP component asserting itself after the softer Tennessee stocks fade. How to Drink Contradiction Rye At 105 proof, Contradiction Rye rewards a slow pour neat, though a few drops of water open up the coconut and vanilla notes hidden beneath the spice. On the rocks, it maintains its structure without thinning out. For cocktails, this blend punches well above its weight in three classics: a Manhattan, where the cinnamon and oak stand up to sweet vermouth; a Sazerac, where the high proof and green peppercorn finish complement absinthe and Peychaud's bitters; and a Vieux Carré, where the creamy mouthfeel integrates seamlessly with Cognac and Bénédictine. Contradiction Rye delivers a creamy, spice-driven profile dominated by cinnamon, clove, mint, and orange zest, balanced by toasted coconut and vanilla. The finish is long and peppery with distinct oak and leather tones. How does Contradiction Rye compare to High West Double Rye? Both are multi-source rye blends that combine different mashbills, but Contradiction Rye pulls from three states (Tennessee, Indiana, West Virginia) while High West Double Rye blends Indiana and Utah stocks. Contradiction also bottles at a higher 105 proof versus Double Rye's 92 proof, giving it a fuller body and more assertive spice. Is Contradiction Rye good for sipping neat? Yes — the 52.5% ABV carries significant heat, but the creamy mouthfeel and layered spice make it rewarding neat for drinkers comfortable with barrel-proof or high-proof rye whiskeys. A small splash of water can soften the intensity without sacrificing complexity. Where is Contradiction Rye made? The blend is assembled and bottled by Smooth Ambler Spirits in Maxwelton, West Virginia, using rye whiskeys distilled in Tennessee, Indiana (MGP), and at Smooth Ambler's own West Virginia distillery. What foods pair well with Contradiction Rye? Charcuterie boards with aged salami and sharp cheddar complement the rye spice. Smoked brisket mirrors the toasted oak notes. Dark chocolate with at least 70% cacao echoes the vanilla and leather. Pecan pie amplifies the cinnamon and toasted coconut. Blue cheese provides a tangy counterpoint to the whiskey's creamy body. What sizes does Contradiction Rye come in? Smooth Ambler Contradiction Rye is available in the standard 750ml bottle size. Is Contradiction Rye worth the price? Contradiction Rye positions as a mid-shelf rye that delivers 105-proof intensity and four-whiskey blending complexity typically associated with higher-priced limited releases. For drinkers interested in multi-state blends, it represents strong value within its tier. Why Contradiction Rye? The defining feature of Contradiction Rye is its four-component architecture — very few American rye whiskeys on the market blend four separate mashbills from three different states into a single bottle. By combining pot-distilled and column-distilled stocks ranging from 51% to 95% rye, the blend achieves a spectrum of flavor that spans creamy and rounded to sharp and grain-forward. The deliberate exclusion of Kentucky-sourced whiskey further distinguishes it from nearly every other blended rye on the shelf. For anyone seeking a rye that reflects genuine blending ambition rather than single-barrel simplicity, this 105-proof bottling from Smooth Ambler makes a compelling case.
