Yoichi Single Cask 20-year 1990 100 Proof 700ml

Crafted from four distinct 1990 distillations, Nikka Yoichi's Single Malt offers a profound journey into Japanese whisky artistry. This non-chill filtered expression, bottled at a robust 100 proof, delivers an exceptionally rich aroma and a lasting peaty character. Its distinctive dry finish is a testament to Yoichi's meticulous traditional distillation methods, making it a compelling exploration for connoisseurs. Tasting Notes Nose: A captivating and complex bouquet that immediately distinguishes itself. Expect rich, deep, and savory peat smoke, reminiscent of a crackling bonfire or damp earth. This is interwoven with maritime notes of sea spray and a subtle brininess. Underneath the peat, delicate hints of orchard fruits like green apple and pear emerge, alongside toasted nuts, dark chocolate, and a whisper of vanilla and oak from its time in casks. A floral sweetness also peeks through, adding layers of elegance. Palate: The palate is robust and full-bodied, delivering on the promise of the nose with a powerful yet refined expression. The peaty character is pronounced but beautifully integrated, offering a drier, more medicinal aspect than some Scotch counterparts. It unfolds with flavors of dark fruit, bitter chocolate, and roasted coffee beans. A spicy kick of black pepper and cinnamon appears mid-palate, balanced by a creamy texture and an underlying sweetness of dried apricots and a touch of honey. The 100 proof ensures a warming intensity without being overwhelming, allowing the intricate flavors to shine. Finish: A remarkably long and distinctive finish, characterized by its dry and enduring nature. The smoky peat lingers, evolving into a pleasant, almost ashy warmth. Notes of toasted oak, liquorice, and a final maritime saltiness persist, leaving the palate clean and eager for the next sip. There's a subtle return of dark fruit and spice in the very tail, cementing its complexity. About the Distillery Nikka Whisky, founded by Masataka Taketsuru, the 'Father of Japanese Whisky,' established its Yoichi Distillery in 1934 on Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island. Taketsuru chose Yoichi for its climate and natural environment, closely resembling Scotland, which he believed was crucial for crafting authentic Scotch-style whiskies. Yoichi is known for its traditional direct coal-fired pot stills and producing whiskies with a distinctive peaty, smoky, and often maritime character, reflective of its coastal location.
