Silver Mound Wormwood

Silver Mound Wormwood (Artemisia schmidtiana 'Silver Mound')Silver Mound Wormwood is a go-to silver foliage perennial for sunny beds when you want clean contrast and a finished edge without relying on flowers. The finely cut, velvety leaves form a soft mound that makes nearby greens and bright blooms look sharper. It thrives in hot, well-drained spots and settles into a low-water rhythm once established. If you need a consistent silver layer that reads from a distance and still looks good up close, this plant delivers. Distinctive FeaturesThis artemisia forms a dense, cushiony mound of lacy, silver-gray foliage that stays attractive through summer when drainage and airflow are good. Tiny yellow flowers may appear in mid to late summer, but they are usually insignificant compared to the foliage. The habit is mounding and compact, making it easy to use as a repeating texture rather than a tall focal shrub. In very hot, humid conditions it can thin or open in the center, so siting for sun, lean soil, and good air movement matters. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun for best color and the tightest mound. Soil: Well-drained soil is essential, and it performs best in average to poor soils. Water: Dry to medium moisture, water to establish, then let soil dry between waterings. USDA Zones: 4 to 8. Mature Size: About 8 to 12 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use a broad drift as a focal point of silver texture that anchors brighter flowers and deeper greens. Edging: Line paths and bed fronts for a low, clean border with season-long color. Rock Gardens: Plant in sunny, gritty pockets where the foliage stays dense and crisp. Xeriscape Beds: Pair with drought-tolerant perennials and grasses for a low-input planting with strong contrast. Mass Planting: Repeat in groups to create a consistent silver thread that ties a border together. Low Maintenance Care Shearing: Shear lightly in late spring or midseason if the mound loosens to encourage fresh, dense growth. Drainage: Avoid wet soils and winter sogginess, since poor drainage can cause decline. Watering: Skip frequent watering once established and water only during extended drought. Spacing: Provide airflow to reduce foliar issues in humid weather and keep the plant looking clean. Cleanup: Tidy winter-worn foliage in early spring as new growth begins. Why Choose Silver Mound Wormwood? Bright Silver Foliage: Lacy silver-gray leaves add contrast that sharpens the entire planting. Compact Mounded Habit: Forms a tidy cushion that works as edging, filler, or a repeating texture. Drought Tolerance: Handles heat and dry conditions well once established in well-drained soil. Deer Resistance: Often avoided by deer and rabbits due to aromatic foliage. Low Flower Distraction: Flowers are usually minor, keeping the focus on foliage and form. If you want a silver plant that functions like a design tool, Silver Mound Wormwood is a dependable choice. Give it full sun and sharp drainage, then let the foliage provide consistent texture all season. It looks strongest when repeated, creating a clean, intentional rhythm through a border. With an occasional shear and the right siting, it stays dense, bright, and easy to maintain.
