Silver Brocade Beach Wormwood

Silver Brocade Beach Wormwood (Artemisia stelleriana 'Silver Brocade')Silver Brocade Beach Wormwood is a tough, silver groundcover that instantly brightens sunny beds and makes nearby colors look cleaner. Its felted, scalloped foliage creates a soft, uniform carpet that reads well from a distance and still looks great up close. Once established, it handles heat, wind, and drier conditions better than many silver plants. Use it when you want strong contrast and a finished edge without constant upkeep. Distinctive FeaturesThis low, spreading artemisia is grown for its intensely silvery, fuzzy foliage with rounded, lobed leaves that resemble perennial dusty miller. The habit is mounding to ground-hugging and gradually spreading, making it useful as a textural mat rather than a tall clump. Summer flowers are small and not showy, so the foliage remains the main feature all season. In the right drainage and sun, it stays dense and bright, and it can be lightly sheared to keep a crisp shape. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun for best color and tight growth, with only light shade tolerated. Soil: Well-drained soil is essential, especially sandy or gritty soils, and avoid heavy, wet ground. Water: Low to moderate moisture, water to establish, then allow the soil to dry between waterings. USDA Zones: 3 to 8. Mature Size: About 6 to 12 inches tall and 12 to 24 inches wide, sometimes wider over time. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use a broad drift as a focal point of silver texture that anchors brighter flowers and deeper greens. Edging: Line paths and bed fronts for a clean, low border that stays bright through summer. Groundcover: Plant in groups to knit into a soft carpet that fills gaps and reduces open soil. Rock Gardens: Tuck into sunny, well-drained pockets where silver foliage can highlight nearby plants. Containers: Use as a foliage contrast plant in pots, especially with blue, white, or purple blooms. Low Maintenance Care Shearing: Shear lightly in midseason or after flowering to refresh growth and keep the mound tidy. Drainage: Prioritize sharp drainage year-round, since wet soil can shorten life and thin foliage. Watering: Avoid frequent shallow watering, and water deeply only when soil has dried. Spacing: Give plants airflow to help foliage stay dry and dense, especially in humid climates. Winter Care: Leave foliage through winter for protection, then tidy in early spring as new growth starts. Why Choose Silver Brocade Beach Wormwood? Bright Silver Foliage: Intensely silvery leaves add contrast that makes the whole planting look sharper. Heat and Drought Tolerance: Performs well in sun and dry conditions once established. Groundcover Texture: Creates a soft, uniform mat that fills space without bulky growth. Coastal Friendly: Handles wind and tough sites when drainage is good. Deer Resistance: Often avoided by deer, making it a practical choice for open landscapes. If you want a silver plant that stays useful all season, Silver Brocade Beach Wormwood is a reliable choice. Give it full sun and fast-draining soil, then let the foliage do the design work as it spreads into a clean mat. It looks especially strong when repeated, creating a consistent silver thread through a border. With a simple shear and the right drainage, it keeps its tidy, bright look with minimal effort.
