River Birches can tolerate periodically moist soils. Add them to the mesic zone in sculpted Rain Gardens to filter water runoff from roofs and streets. They partner beautifully with rough-textured Prairie plants like Black-Eyed Susan and Coneflower. Underplant with low shrubs as ground cover while planting, and let them grow up together. Or, create a very modern look in a streamlined raised bed. Add a single variety of groundcover underneath with an oversized gazing ball as décor. No need to "gild the lily" with this glorious selection. #ProPlantTips for Care In all but the warmest zones, Shiloh Splash River Birch can be grown in full sun. In warmer climates, give them part shade during the afternoon hours. Mulch is important to keep the root system cool. Apply a three-inch layer of pine bark or pine straw, then pull it back from around the trunk. We recommend a medium amount of supplemental water if you don't receive rainfall. They can even tolerate occasional wetter soil for short periods, so you can site them in low-lying areas. Feed with an "Acid Lovers" formula, slow-release fertilizer in spring. Follow application rates on the label. If you need to correct the canopy, wait to prune until after the leaves come out in spring. This helps you avoid dripping sap.
