Seven-Son Flower

Seven-Son Flower (Heptacodium miconioides)Seven-son Flower is a late-season standout that keeps the landscape interesting when most shrubs and trees are winding down. In late summer, clusters of fragrant white flowers appear, then the show continues as rosy pink to red sepals take over and carry color into fall. Its foliage stays clean and deep green through summer, giving you a polished backdrop in mixed plantings. With exfoliating bark that looks good after leaf drop, it delivers true multi-season value in a manageable size. Distinctive FeaturesThis large shrub or small tree is best known for its two-stage display, creamy white late-summer flowers followed by persistent, showy sepals that deepen to pink-red as the season cools. The bark peels in thin strips to reveal lighter tones beneath, adding a strong winter texture that reads well against evergreens or dark backgrounds. The plant naturally forms a multi-stemmed, vase-like structure, but it can also be trained into a small tree form for a more architectural look. It is generally considered easy to grow when given sun, drainage, and consistent moisture during establishment. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to partial shade, with best flowering and sepal color in full sun. Soil: Well-drained soil is ideal, and it tolerates a range of soil types when drainage is reliable. Water: Medium, keep evenly moist during establishment, then water during extended dry periods. USDA Zones: 5 to 9. Mature Size: About 15 to 20 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide. Habit: Upright, vase-shaped and multi-stemmed, with the option to train into a small tree form. Foliage: Dark green in summer with yellow fall color in many sites. Flowers: Fragrant white flowers in late summer to early fall followed by pink to red sepals. Fruit: Small seed clusters with persistent sepals that provide fall color. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Plant as a specimen where the late-season flowers, red sepals, and peeling bark can carry the main view into fall and winter. Mixed Shrub Border: Place toward the back of beds to add height, late bloom, and a clean green backdrop. Small Tree Accent: Train up as a small tree near patios or entries to enjoy fragrance and bark up close. Screening: Use in a loose row as an informal screen that adds seasonal color when many screens look flat. Pollinator Planting: Add to gardens that need late-season nectar for bees and butterflies. Low Maintenance Care Pruning: Prune in late winter to shape, thin lightly, and encourage strong new growth that supports flowering. Watering: Deep water through the first one to two growing seasons, then irrigate during drought to reduce stress. Mulching: Mulch over the root zone to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperatures, keeping mulch off the stems. Training: Remove lower branches over time to highlight bark, or keep multiple stems for a fuller, natural habit. Feeding: Use compost or a light, balanced feeding in spring if growth is slow in lean soils. Why Choose Seven-son Flower? Late-Season Interest: Flowers and sepal color arrive when most landscapes are fading. Two-Stage Display: White blooms transition into pink to red sepals for extended seasonal color. Winter Bark: Exfoliating bark adds texture and character after leaf drop. Flexible Form: Works as a large shrub or can be trained into a small ornamental tree. Easy Performance: Adaptable and generally low fuss once established in a well-drained site. If you want a plant that peaks at the perfect time and still looks good when winter arrives, Seven-son Flower is a strong choice. Give it sun, drainage, and steady moisture while it establishes, and it will reward you with fragrance, fall color, and bark interest that keeps the landscape engaging well past summer.
