Reliques of Ancient English Poetry, Thomas Percy, Three Volumes, London 1839

Reliques of Ancient English Poetry, Thomas Percy, Three Volumes, London 1839   A complete three volume 1839 London edition of Reliques of Ancient English Poetry, compiled and edited by Thomas Percy, one of the most influential works in the preservation of early English and Scottish ballad tradition.   First issued in the 18th century, Percy’s Reliques fundamentally reshaped English literary taste by reintroducing medieval and early modern verse at a time when classical forms dominated. Drawing from manuscript sources and oral tradition, the work elevated vernacular poetry into serious literary study and directly influenced the rise of the Romantic movement.   Writers including Wordsworth and Coleridge credited Percy with awakening their interest in folklore, balladry, and emotional expression, making this work not just a collection, but a turning point in literary history.   This 1839 edition reflects its full Victorian canonization, a period when the Reliques had become essential to any serious private library. The set gathers narrative ballads, heroic verse, and early songs, preserving voices that would have otherwise been lost to time.   Each volume is finely bound with gilt decorated spines, marbled boards, and matching marbled endpapers, presenting as a cohesive and visually striking set.   Provenance is retained through the engraved armorial bookplate of George G. Stevenson, placing the set within a 19th century English private collection. His ownership is most often associated with substantial and thoughtfully assembled libraries, adding continuity to the history of the work as both literature and object.   England, 1839.   Condition Light wear to bindings consistent with age. Interiors clean with expected toning. Structurally sound and complete across all three volumes.
