Serviceberry (Amelanchier laevis)

Amelanchier laevis, commonly known as Serviceberry, is a deciduous tree native to eastern North America. It is valued for its early spring flowers, edible fruit, and adaptability in naturalized and residential landscapes. Serviceberry typically grows 15 to 25 feet tall with a spread of 15 to 20 feet, forming a multi-stemmed small tree or large shrub with an open, rounded canopy. The foliage emerges with a slight bronze tint before maturing to medium green. In early spring, before or just as the leaves emerge, clusters of white, five-petaled flowers appear along the branches. These are followed by small, berry-like pomes that ripen to a dark purple in early summer and are edible. Amelanchier laevis grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils. It is adaptable to a variety of soil types but performs best with consistent moisture and good drainage. Maintenance is generally low, with occasional pruning to maintain structure or remove crossing branches.
