Harlequin Basslet - Caribbean

Serranus tigrinus The Harlequin Basslet is a small, hardy reef fish recognized for its bold and eye-catching coloration. Adults have a pale white to yellowish body covered with irregular black blotches and orange to reddish accents, creating a harlequin-like pattern that makes them stand out in any aquarium. Typically found alone or in pairs, they spend much of their time near the substrate or among rocky crevices, where their mottled markings provide natural camouflage. Harlequin Basslets grow to about 5 inches (12.5 cm), making them a slightly larger but still manageable choice for marine hobbyists. In the wild, this species ranges throughout the western Atlantic, from southern Florida and the Bahamas through the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. They inhabit rocky reefs, patch reefs, and rubble zones, often close to shelter, where they actively hunt for food. In the aquarium, Harlequin Basslets do best in tanks with plenty of rockwork, caves, and secure hiding places. They are carnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates, worms, and tiny fish, and should be provided a varied diet of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, krill, finely chopped seafood, and other meaty frozen foods. While generally reef-safe and harmless to corals, they may prey on very small ornamental shrimp or tiny fish tankmates. Adaptable, resilient, and visually striking, the Harlequin Basslet makes a rewarding addition for aquarists seeking a distinctive and durable species for their marine aquarium.
