Ivorian Senufo Statue - Woman w/ Croocdile

Senufo Statue from Ivory Coast 18th century This striking wooden statue portrays a pregnant woman with a crocodile resting on her head, combining themes of fertility, nature, and spiritual protection. The woman’s figure is elegantly carved, with her rounded belly prominently displayed, symbolizing the sacredness of motherhood and new life. Her posture is graceful, standing tall yet relaxed, her hands gently cradling her stomach in a gesture of nurturing care. Her face, softly detailed, exudes calm and contemplation, with closed eyes suggesting deep inner focus or connection to a greater force. The intricate carving of her features contrasts with the powerful presence of the crocodile perched on her head. The reptile's body curves slightly, as though it is guarding the woman, its textured scales carefully rendered by the artist. The crocodile's sharp, expressive eyes seem to hold watchful authority, symbolizing protection and primal strength. The juxtaposition of the woman’s gentle, life-giving form with the ancient, predatory energy of the crocodile may evoke traditional mythologies, where animals serve as spiritual guides or symbols of transformation. The crocodile, often associated with water and fertility, complements the woman’s pregnancy, representing the balance of life, death, and rebirth. This statue, standing around three feet tall, is a powerful testament to the union of human and animal spirits. The detailed craftsmanship and rich symbolism offer both an artistic and spiritual statement about the deep connections between motherhood, nature, and protection.
