Seeing Loud: Basquiat and Music

To fully appreciate the work of neo-expressionist artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, one must understand the unique and ever-important role that music played in his life and creative practice. Explore the many ways that this visionary’s short but prolific career was influenced by the music he surrounded himself with in Seeing Loud: Basquiat and Music. Published in conjunction with multimedia exhibitions at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Cite de la musique de la Philharmonie de Paris, this fascinating tome dives into everything from Basquiats’ own career as a musician, the music that served as a soundtrack to his art-making and the diverse collection of musical artists that inspired him through a series of essays and interviews with his friends and collaborators. This text is illustrated with reproductions of his frenetic, rebellious, graffiti-like artwork, excerpts from his notebooks and rarely-seen photographs and polaroid snapshots of the artist and his inner circle, which together offer a glimpse into the 1980s downtown New York’s creative scene and into Basquiat’s creative process. It’s a must-have for art and music fanatics alike — and also just an undeniably cool addition to any coffee table vignette.   •9.75"W x 1.25"D x 12"H   •various contributors •forewords by Stephane Aquin and Marie-Pauline Martin •introduction by Mary-Dailey Desmarais •hardcover •287 pages
