The name "Seabees" is a play on the word "CB," which stands for Construction Battalion. The Seabees were first established in 1942 during World War II, to provide construction support to the Navy. They have played a critical role in many operations throughout the history of the United States, including both World War II and the Korean War, where they built everything from airfields, too barracks, to hospitals. Throughout the Cold War, the Seabees were involved in various construction projects around the world, including in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. In the post-Cold War era, Seabees have been involved in peacekeeping operations and humanitarian missions, such as Operation Restore Hope in Somalia, and Operation Provide Relief in Rwanda. They have also been deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. The Seabees motto is "We build, We fight", highlighting their dual role of construction and combat readiness.
