Sea Urchin Dwarf White Pine (Pinus strobus 'Sea Urchin') is a dwarf selection of our native Eastern White Pine that forms a dense rounded bun of soft blue-green needles, reaching 3 to 4 feet tall and wide in zones 3 through 8. The needles are shorter than the species and the growth is congested, which gives the plant its bristly outline. Blue Shag, the dwarf white pine already in the catalog, is looser and more upright. Sea Urchin is tighter and rounder, and it holds that ball shape on its own without shearing. Both keep the soft texture that separates white pine from the stiff needles of an Austrian or Scotch pine, so this is a conifer you can plant beside a path without anyone getting poked. Use it at the front of a foundation bed, in a rock garden, in a mixed conifer border, or in a container. Give it room for its full spread, since crowding will flatten one side permanently. Light: full sun to partial sun Water: even moisture, deep watering in dry spells Soil: well drained and slightly acidic, avoid heavy wet clay Care: no pruning needed, pinch candles in late spring only if you want it tighter Add Sea Urchin Dwarf White Pine to your cart.
