Scdophilus™ utilizes a well documented Lactobacillus acidophilus strain that is known to support intestinal health. The Scdophilus probiotic formula was developed by GI ProHealth™ to offer the utmost in purity, hypoallergenicity, stability and clinical efficacy. Probiotic means "for life" “pro” is a Latin word meaning "for" or “forward", and the word “biotic” is Greek (biotikos) meaning "living". Probiotics are bacteria that are supportive of life, and have the capacity to prevent or reduce the effects of pathogenic organisms. To be effective, the probiotic must have the ability to increase in the gastrointestinal tract of the individual, and at the same, time decrease the number and the effect of the disease-producing organisms in the intestinal tract. Lactobacillus acidophilus is well recognized as one of the most thoroughly documented strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and is known to play a crucial role in the health and maintenance of the intestinal tract. Environmental stress, improper diet leading to poor nutrition, the repetitive use of antibiotics and other medications, as well as exposures to chemical toxins in the diet and environment can upset the delicate balance of the intestinal flora, significantly reducing the numbers of friendly bacteria. This can be the prelude the development of digestive disorders, infections, reduced immune function, and increased allergic sensitivity, gastrointestinal inflammation, etc. LACTOBACILLUS ACIDOPHILUS L. acidophilus is one of the most important microorganisms and is a primary resident of the small intestine. It is known to implant itself (set up residence) on the intestinal wall as well as in the lining of the wall of the vagina, cervix, and urethra. It performs many critical functions, including inhibiting pathogenic organisms and preventing them from multiplying and colonizing. It performs these functions by producing lactic and acetic acid, which have an adverse effect on pathogens. Additionally, L. acidophilus is documented to produces natural antibiotics like lactocidin, acidophilin, etc., which have known anti-microbial activity against Escherichia coli, (causing diarrhea, Staphylococcus aureus (food poisoning and toxic shock syndrome), Salmonella (food poisoning), Candida albicans (yeast overgrowth and oral thrush), Shigella (dysentery), as well as other undesirable and pathogenic organisms including the strains of Bacillus, Micrococcus and Cornebacteria. The L. acidophilus organism aids in the digestion and absorption of nutrients, supports the maintenance of regularity (stabilizes conditions of diarrhea and or constipation) and helps alleviate lactose intolerance caused by the deficiency of the enzyme lactase. Additionally, L. acidophilus has been shown to have a high tolerance for acids and bile salts, which makes it a viable and hearty microorganism. L. acidophilus is the most prevalent and well-studied strain of enteric bacteria that is recognized to support intestinal health. RESEARCH AND APPLICATIONS Clinical research has documented the usefulness of the Lactobacillus acidophilus strain in support of a number of conditions including: Alleviation of diarrhea associated with antibiotics Prevention of Clostridia difficile colonization Alleviation of diarrhea associated with rotaviral gastroenteritis Down-regulation of milk-induced inflammatory GI response Prevention and alleviation of the symptoms of lactose intolerance Alleviation of intestinal inflammation and permeability Enhancement of the intestine’s immunological barrier function Prevention of bacterial and yeast related intestinal infections SCD Compliant Base The highest quality plant-based cellulose is used in place of non-compliant base ingredients including; maltodextrin (corn, wheat or rice derived), the chicory root based inulin oligosaccharide, anhydrose dextrose (corn derived) and/or fructooligosaccharides (FOS).
