The Best Mulch for Vegetable Gardens Salt Hay is truly a unique mulch that provides numerous benefits over other mulches. Spartina Patens, known as Salt Hay, is a type of natural cord grass that grows in salt marshes along the Eastern Seaboard. It’s a vastly superior alternative to traditional vegetable garden mulch like wheat straw; Salt Hay Vegetable Garden Mulch contains NO weed seeds.   Our Salt Hay Mulch is coveted and highly sought after by gardeners across the country. Its organic nature makes it ideal for garden beds. The shape and consistency of Salt Hay protect the soil from sunlight, both insulating delicate roots while also retaining moisture to enhance plant growth and development. This same feature makes it a great winter insulator for bulbs, vegetables, and perennials. Unlike wood chip mulch, Salt Hay is rot resistant, does not compact, and decomposes slowly, which means that it will last much longer than traditional mulches. It is incredibly light, making it very easy to install in garden beds without hours of strenuous pitch forking and spreading. One of the primary benefits of mulching your gardens with Salt Hay is that, unlike Wheat Straw, it does not contain seeds, meaning you won't have to worry about unwanted weeds sprouting up in your garden beds.  Finally, Salt Hay is also great for erosion control. When seeding your lawn, Salt Hay offers superior coverage and seed protection which ensures better grass seed germination.  Use when seeding your lawn to cover the grass seed to allow the moisture to remain in the soil to ensure better seed germination.  Wheat straw contains seeds, which will leave you with wheat straw growing in your yard.
