Nitrate builds up when a tank lacks enough anaerobic zones or denitrification is incomplete. High nitrate encourages unwanted algae (which can irritate nearby corals) and slows coral growth directly. A well-run reef tank should stay under 1 mg/L nitrate; fish-only tanks typically run higher. Range: approximately 0.05-20 mg/L as nitrate-nitrogen (0.2-100 mg/L as nitrate ion) Kit size: approximately 60 measurements Many nitrate tests convert nitrate to nitrite for measurement, a method prone to amine interference that can read artificially low.
