The Battle of Saipan was fought from 15 June to 9 July 1944 on the island of Saipan in the Marianas Islands. With the capture of Saipan, the US could now launch B-29's to strike the Japanese homeland. Marine General Holland Smith said of Saipan "It was the decisive battle of the Pacific offensive." Japanese Prime Minister Hideki Tojo resigned as a result of Japan losing Saipan. Designated a "Special Operations Map Saipan Area," this map would have been used in planning the invasion in 1944.
